UHS relying on new digital machine to encourage lead testing in infants
Responding to a greater awareness of lead hazards and a push for more comprehensive testing, United Health Services will begin using new digital machines this week to test infants and youngsters who pass through their six family care centers. The new machines will make it faster and more convenient to take the test and get results, which UHS hopes will encourage more parents to have their children tested. All children are supposed to be tested at least twice before the age of 2, according to federal standards. On paper, it looks sound. But many practical obstacles -- including transience, lack of access and resistant parents -- prevent testing of nearly 47 percent of Broome County children...

Using the rapid test, providers can deliver blood lead results equivalent to those reported by outside laboratories in just three minutes. Since the beginning of August, millions of products containing unsafe levels of lead paint have been recalled. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Americans should expect more recalls in the coming months.
